Wolf Range Burner Clicks But Will Not Light: What It Actually Means

A Wolf sealed burner that sparks endlessly without catching is almost never a dead burner. Here is what the clicking is telling you, what to check yourself, and which of the four possible faults it usually turns out to be.

A Wolf sealed burner that clicks steadily but never lights is one of the few faults where the noise is genuinely useful diagnostic information. The clicking is the spark module doing exactly what it is designed to do. The question is why it has been asked to do it, and whether gas is arriving at the same time.

Before assuming a part has died, it is worth knowing that on the Wolf platform this symptom breaks into four causes, and three of them are cheaper than most people expect. Two of them you can identify from the kitchen floor without a meter.

What the clicking is actually telling you

Wolf sealed burner cooktops and range tops use a single spark module driving every electrode on the surface. Turn one knob to LITE and all of the electrodes fire together — that is normal, it is not a sign that the whole cooktop has failed.

The module fires because a switch has closed. Under each control knob is a small ignition switch that closes at the LITE position and opens once the burner has caught and you turn back to a set flame level. So a burner that clicks without stopping is telling you one of two things: either a switch is stuck closed, or a switch is closed correctly but the flame is not establishing to end the cycle.

The distinction matters enormously. Clicking with no gas at all points at the valve, the orifice or the gas supply. Clicking with gas you can smell but no flame points at the electrode itself, or at its position relative to the burner head. Clicking that continues after every knob is off points squarely at a switch or at moisture where it should not be.

The four faults, in the order we find them

In rough order of frequency across Mercer Island calls:

  1. Moisture or spill contamination. Something boiled over, tracked under the burner cap or into the switch behind the knob, and the module now reads a permanent request. This is the single most common cause and it is often free to fix. It also produces the distinctive version of this fault where the clicking never stops, whatever you do with the knobs.
  2. The burner cap sitting wrong. Wolf burner caps have a specific seat. Lifted off for cleaning and dropped back a few degrees out of position, the cap blocks the flame path from the port nearest the electrode. Gas is arriving, spark is present, and the flame never bridges. Lift the cap, look at the seat, put it back square.
  3. Electrode fouled, cracked or out of gap. The ceramic body cracks with thermal cycling or a knock during cleaning, and the spark starts jumping to ground somewhere other than the burner. You can often see this: the spark is visible but landing in the wrong place, or it is weak and yellow rather than a crisp blue snap.
  4. Spark module or switch failure. The genuine electrical fault, and the least common of the four. This is the one that needs a meter, because the module and the switch produce very similar symptoms and swapping the wrong one is an expensive guess.

What is worth checking before anyone comes out

Give the burner a proper look with the gas turned off at the appliance shutoff.

  • Take the cap and the burner head off. They lift straight up on a sealed burner. Check the underside of the cap for carbon, and check the ports around the head for blockage. A stiff brush and warm water clears most of it; nothing metal, nothing sharp, and nothing goes into a port.
  • Look at the electrode. It should be intact ceramic with a clean metal tip. Any crack, chip or dark tracking mark down the ceramic body means it is done.
  • Let it dry completely. If there has been a spill, twenty-four hours of drying with the parts off is not excessive, and it resolves a real share of these faults outright.
  • Seat everything squarely and try again. Cap flat, head located on its pin, nothing proud.

If the clicking continues with every knob in the off position, stop there. That is a switch or module fault and it is not a cleaning problem.

When it is worth calling someone

Call if any of the following apply, and do not keep trying the burner in the meantime.

You can smell gas. A burner that is delivering gas without igniting is putting unburnt gas into the room every time you try it. Shut the appliance valve and get it looked at. This is not a wait-and-see fault.

The clicking will not stop with the knobs off. The module is being held on. Left alone it will eventually cook itself, and it is the more expensive of the two parts involved.

The electrode is visibly damaged. It is a serviceable part and not an expensive one, but it has to be the right part for your model and serial, and it needs setting at the correct gap when it goes back.

More than one burner is affected. A single burner is usually mechanical. Several at once moves the probability sharply toward the module or the wiring behind it, and that is meter work.

For most of these the repair is a single component, and on a Wolf range that is a genuinely worthwhile thing to establish before anyone starts talking about the appliance being at the end of its life. These are built to have parts replaced. A burner that will not light is close to the smallest fault a range can have.

Follow-up questions

Is it safe to keep using the other burners while one clicks?

If the clicking burner is switched off and no gas smell is present, the other burners are safe to use. If the spark keeps firing with every knob off, or you can smell gas at any point, turn the range off at the shutoff valve and call before using it again.

Why does one burner clicking make all of them spark?

Wolf sealed burner tops run a single spark module that fires every electrode at once. That is normal ignition behaviour, not a fault in itself — it just means the clicking tells you a switch somewhere is closed, without telling you which one.

Can a spilled pot really cause this?

Yes, and it is the most common cause. Liquid tracks into the switch under a control knob or bridges the electrode to the burner cap, and the module reads a permanent ignition request. Drying it out fully sometimes clears it on its own.
